WIN launches the Small Grant Fund

Dear Members,

As the Chair of the Water Integrity Network Interim Steering Committee, it gives me great pleasure launch the pilot phase of the WIN Small Grant Fund. The fund was set up with the intention of catalysing local actions by civil society organisations (CSOs) to promote transparency, accountability and integrity and to prevent corruption in the water sector. The WIN Small Grants Fund is a small, flexible project fund with relatively rapid deployment. Successful organisations can in a short time immediately access funds to support anti-corruption action on the ground, helping them to have an impact where it most matters.

We look forward to receiving your applications. We intend to support up to 15 small activities in 2008. Through these projects WIN will help partners test preventative actions that lead to real change and to disseminate the most effective anti-corruption methodologies and best practices. Shared learning is at the heart of WIN and actions funded by WIN will be documented and publicised through the WIN website and newsletter.

Please do not to be discouraged if your application is not successful this time. This is the pilot year of the Fund and only a limited number of projects will be funded. As WIN grows, we hope to expand the resources available.

Sincerely

Hakan Tropp

SOMALIA: A shepherd seeks water for his goat at a large catchment area outside the village of Isdorto in the southern Bakol Region. The catchment has been empty for 70 days. Many livestock are dying, and the nearest water point is 25 km away. The water basin has dried up only three times in the past 80 years. The last time was in 1992, Somalia’s worst drought in recent history.
