Monitoring the Disbursements of the Volta River Authority Resettlement Trust Fund

Micro Grant (MG6), 2,000 EUR

After the construction of the Akosombo Hydroelectric dams, 52 resettlement communities were established to cater for 740 displaced villages. In order to improve the standard of living of the resettled communities, the Volta River Authority Resettlement Trust Fund was established in 1996 by the joint efforts of the Government of Ghana and the Volta River Authority.

Under the deed that established the Trust Fund, the Volta River Authority is obliged to contribute the Cedi equivalent of $ 500.000 annually, to be used for social and welfare projects in the resettlement communities.

The project aims to make recommendations to ensure transparency in the disbursement of the Fund, to ensure that only community driven projects are provided and avoid duplication in the provision of services.

The activities will be conducted through a combination of desk-studies related to the operation mechanism of the fund, interviews with the local authorities and community dialogues.
