The IRC Symposium 2010 will focus on three themes in the provision and use of decentralised WASH
services, and the linkages between them:
Each theme will address the challenge of these issues against a background of decentralisation in
the sector and the need to provide to sustainable WASH services to all, especially the poorest. It will
address in depth some of the key governance challenges in the sector: those related to costeffectiveness, finances and financing.
The target audience for the symposium is wide ranging, from practitioners, to policy makers, funders
and researchers. Capacity is limited to 120 participants.
The symposium will be for three days and will be held in English. After an introduction of selected
keynote presentations, parallel case study based sessions will address issues that will be highlighted
in a Background Paper, distributed in advance. A defining feature of the Symposium will be the
significant amount of space for discussion among participants, building on the lessons from
participants’ papers and presentations.
The event will start with a cocktail reception and registration at IRC’s office at the heart of The
Hague in the Netherlands, in the evening on Monday 15th November 2010. The Symposium itself will
run for the following three days, from Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th November inclusive. The venue
is the Concordia Theatre, also in the centre of The Hague. This has excellent conference facilities and
is fully accessible to people who are mobility impaired or disabled. There is a wide variety of hotel
accommodation within easy reach; excellent bus and tram access is on hand.
