II. WIN Regional Workshop: Anglophone West Africa

Accra, Ghana, 26 Sep 07 - 27 Sep 07

“Transparency and accountability in delivery of water and sanitation services”

26-27 September 2007 in Accra, Ghana.

This WIN supported workshop covered the region of Anglophone West-Africa and was jointly organised by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, and the TREND Group. Participants came from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Tunisia and Benin.

The workshop provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to familiarise themselves with concepts and frameworks related to transparency and accountability and to share experiences and talk about common problems in the region.

The workshop proved to be a crucial first step towards documenting cases and experiences addressing transparency and accountability in the water and sanitation sector in West Africa. Even though networking within Anglophone West Africa is challenging, the workshop brought together stakeholders from different countries which was perceived as very useful by the participants. During the workshop, the participants identified possible follow-up actions for the way forward in the fight against corruption in the water and sanitation sector, as part of the way forward of the Water Integrity Network in Anglophone West Africa. The workshop showed clearly that there is a strong interest in transparency issues in the region and commitment to address problems.
