Risk type:Â Cause
Risk driver:Â Internal
DESCRIPTION
Non-competitive salary levels, as well as clientelism, nepotism, or favouritism in the selection and promotion of staff, increase the probability of a water sector organization having incompetent staff. It is easier for colleagues or third parties to take advantage of staff if they lack awareness of internal processes and procedures (e.g. for procurement, etc.) or technical knowledge. Besides being vulnerable to exploitation, incompetent staff can seriously harm the organization’s performance and endanger its reputation. Incompetent staff are more likely to make mistakes in operation and maintenance, inadequately deal with customer interactions, or cause serious issues with tax authorities.
