Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

Using an integrity lens to assess the school WASH problem in India

Private companies which provide a wide range of services and products within the water sector. These can be artisans, sanitation companies, manufacturers, construction contractors, consultants, drilling companies etc. and are mostly contracted by public institutions, water utilities or development organisations. When SMEs bid on a tendered contract, they are referred to as ‘bidders’ and when they are awarded the contract – during the project execution phase – they are referred to as ‘contractors’.
